2006 New Haven Science Fair

The New Haven Science Fair Program was started in 1995 with seven test schools. This past year over 8000 New Haven students and 43 schools participated, utilizing more than 160 volunteers for mentoring and judging. The program is dedicated to improve the quality of education, and particularly science and math education in the New Haven Public Schools Grades Pre-K through 12.

The New Haven Science Fair Program is truly a partnership involving businesses, universities, associations, foundations, and private citizens, working with the public schools' teachers, students, and administrators, and the students' parents. The goal of the program is to work with children and teachers from Pre-K through grade 12, to help them carry out investigative hands-on science fair projects, in order to promote skills in critical thinking, science process and communication.

The five components of the Science Fair Program are:

  • The Mentor Program: Mentors from local universities and industries work with students in grades K-12. Some mentors assist as classroom mentors, working with elementary teachers and their classes (PreK-4), while others guide individual students or teams from grades 5 through 12.
  • Family Science Night Program: Family Science Nights are held at various schools around New Haven. Families work together doing an investigative science project, thereby helping parents become more familiar with the process and more supportive of their children in the Science Fair Program.
  • Professional Development for Teachers: a series of Professional Development workshops focused on Science Fair topics.
  • Internship Program: A summer internship program has been established which pairs qualified, mentored high school students with scientists in laboratories throughout the community. Past internship sponsors include: Olin Corporation, CT Agricultural Experiment Station and various departments of Yale University.
  • The New Haven Science Fair Program: This Fair, which is the culmination of the year's activities, takes place May 10-12, 2011 at Yale University's Commons Dining Hall.
