Lara Smetana

Assistant Professor, Elementary Science Education

Southern Connecticut State University

Lara Smetana is an assistant professor of science teacher education at Southern Connecticut State University. She brings classroom experience as an 8th grade physical science teacher and has worked with a variety of summer and informal education programs across the country. Lara teaches courses in elementary science methods and educational technology and mentors student teachers. Her research interests include pre- and in-service teacher education and the use of educational technology in science teaching and learning. Lara has also been named Director for the SCSU Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science.

Michelle Cirello

Project Manager

New Haven Science Fair Program, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce

Michelle is a former human resources professional for Beekley Corporation, a medical manufacturing company located in Bristol, CT. She left Beekley a few years ago to raise her young children—both are now students at Nathan Hale School. She continues to work part-time coaching clients conducting a job search, and facilitates motivational seminars for Beekley. Working as project manager for the Science Fair has been a great experience to meet others in the Science community.

Jack Crane

Project Director

ConnStep

Jack was previously Director of Olin’s Metals research laboratory and was responsible for process and product development in the metals and microelectronics packaging materials segment of Olin’s businesses. He is currently a consultant with CONNSTEP, Inc, a non- profit consulting group assisting Connecticut manufacturers become more competitive businesses.

He received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University and his MS in Metallurgical Engineering from Yale University.

Mary DeRome

Artificial Cell Technologies, Inc.

Mary earned her BS in chemistry and an MS in cell and molecular biology. She worked at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, where she became involved in community science education outreach through the Bayer Science Forum and Bayer’s Making Science Make Sense program, which brought hands-on science experiments into classrooms. She has also mentored and judged projects in the New Haven Science Fair for 8 years. Through the Forum, Mary organized the efforts of 100 plus Bayer employee volunteers in a number of community education outreach efforts. She is currently a senior scientist at Artificial Cell Technologies and she continues to mentor student science fair projects at Career and Cross High Schools in New Haven.

Cathy Van Dyke

Mentor Program Coordinator

Cathy earned a BA in chemistry summa cum laude from McDaniel College, an MS in environmental science and engineering from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MPPM from Yale School of Management. She worked for more than 25 years applying her chemical education in the environmental field and in manufacturing before deciding to make the career change to teaching chemistry. Cathy taught high school chemistry at a sports academy in Vermont and at public schools in Southington and New Haven before joining the Science Fair team.

Joanna Price

Coordinator of Community Programs in Science

Yale University

A former stem cell researcher, Joanna left the research bench to become Yale University’s first coordinator of community programs in science in 2007. Working in the Office of New Haven and State Affairs, she is responsible for leading Yale’s effort to develop a comprehensive array of science education activities for students, educators and the general public. Joanna enjoys working with the New Haven Science Fair Program and seeing all of the projects New Haven’s young scientists bring to the City-wide Science Fair.

Jay Kerwin

PhD student, Chemistry Department, Yale University

Yale University

Jay Kerwin is a 5th year PhD student in the Chemistry Department at Yale University. He has volunteered as both a mentor and a judge for the New Haven Science Fair for the past 4 years. Jay is a member of the Yale Center for Research on Interface and Surface Phenomena (CRISP) and his research area is theoretical surface science, which involves computer modeling of reactions between gas phase molecules and various surfaces.

Patricia Scussel

Executive Director

Greater New Haven Leadership Center / New Haven Network for Public Education

Patti Scussel is executive director of the Greater New Haven Leadership Center and the New Haven Network for Public Education at the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in creating the Chamber's Not-for-Profit Resource Council. Patti serves on several boards and committees in the region, and has served as a judge in the New Haven Science Fair program since 2004. Patti received her BA in Communications from Albertus Magnus College and her MBA from the University of New Haven. She is currently an adjunct professor in Albertus's Masters of Arts in Leadership program.

Richard Therrien

Science Supervisor K-12

New Haven Public Schools

Richard Therrien is K-12 science supervisor in New Haven, overseeing all science teachers, curriculum, materials, and programs in the district. He has been a science teacher and leader in Connecticut for 20 years, working with students from 6th to 12th grade in various subjects. He has served as president of the Connecticut Science Teachers Association, as well as an active professional developer, committee member and science teacher educator in various state programs. He received a BA in astronomy from Case Western Reserve University, MS and Sixth Year in Science Education from University of Bridgeport, and Sixth Year Degree in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University.
