The New Haven Science Fair Program originated as The Olin-Yale-New Haven Public School Science Fair Program in 1993 with participation by seven (7) schools. A couple of years later Bayer Healthcare joined the partnership as a full sponsor. The Program has now expanded to include almost all of the schools in the New Haven Public School system. The Connecticut Pre Engineering Program (CPEP) was the administrative agent for the Program from its inception. In 2007, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce took over the administration. This past year over 7,000 New Haven students and 43 schools participated, utilizing more than 160 volunteers for mentoring and judging. The program is dedicated to improve the quality of education, and particularly science and math education in the New Haven Public Schools Grades PreK through 12. In 2001-2002, the New Haven Science Fair Mentor Program was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the only PreK-12 program in the country to receive this prestigious award. And, in 2003, New Haven was recognized as an All-America City on the basis of the accomplishments of 3 programs in New Haven, including the Olin Yale-Bayer-NHPS Partnership. Yale has contributed both a wide variety of scientific and engineering talent to the Program, and funding has come directly from the faculty of a wide array of Schools, along with support from the Yale Community Outreach. |
